How Whatnot's fees work
Commission: item price only
Whatnot calculates commission on the item price (gross merchandise value). Shipping and taxes paid by the buyer are not included. The rate depends on your category and your tier, as shown above.
Payment processing: 2.9% + $0.30
Processing is charged on the total order value the buyer pays, including the item price, buyer-paid shipping and taxes, plus a fixed $0.30 per transaction. Enter the buyer's tax rate under More options for an exact figure.
High-value orders over $1,500
Since January 14, 2026, the part of an order above $1,500 pays 0% commission in qualifying categories: comics and anime, toys and hobbies, coins and money, trading card games, entertainment cards, sports singles, bags and accessories, and jewelry and watches. Processing is still charged on the full amount.
Categories not listed
Whatnot's new table does not mention the old 5% electronics rate. If you sell electronics, check the fee shown on your order and use the "Everything else" category as an estimate.
How to work out Whatnot fees by hand
Find your commission rate in the table from your category and your sales over the last four weeks. Multiply it by the item price only. Then work out processing: add the item price, the shipping the buyer paid and the sales tax, take 2.9% of that and add $0.30. Subtract both from the item price plus shipping to get your payout.
For a $300 fashion item with $8 shipping and 7% tax at the standard tier: commission is 8% of $300, or $24. Processing is 2.9% of $329.56 plus $0.30, or $9.86. You receive $274.14 before your postage.
Common mistakes
- Using the old flat 8% plus a separate 5% electronics rate. The tiered table replaced it on September 21, 2026.
- Adding shipping to the commission. Commission is on the item price only; only processing includes shipping and tax.
- Forgetting the high-value rule. In qualifying categories, nothing above $1,500 pays commission.
Tips
- Check your tier every 28 days. Moving from standard to the $15k tier lowers fashion commission from 8% to 7%.
- Price shipping fairly. It is not in the commission base but is in the processing base.
- Use target mode to set starting bids and buy-it-now prices that cover fees and costs.
